Ethnic Dance Festival

In 2004, Larry Reed participated in the 26th annual San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival during Week 3’s performances as Shadow Master. Between the 10 performances that took place, Larry Reed directed shadow transitions cast on the large screen in the background.

“INTRODUCING LARRY REED-SHADOW MASTER

Larry Reed is the Artistic Director of ShadowLight Productions. He has worked in shadow theater for over three decades, beginning as one of the first American performers of Balinese shadow theater (wayang kulit). Larry Reed has pioneered contemporary shadow theater, which combines the power of shadows, the scale of film, and the immediacy of live performance. Creating shadows with Larry Reed are Lorna Chui, Christine Marie, I Made Moja, Leonidas Kassapides, and Aiyana Trotter.

Special thanks to the following artists who perform in this show's transitions between pieces: Heather Bridges, N'Dongo M'Baya, Samba Guisse, Miguel Martinez, Nayo Ulloa, and Netza Vidal.”

“From a Tahitian sunrise to a Mexican rainforest, from the spirituality of the highlands of Peru, to the passionate embraces of tango, and the dynamic fireworks of a West African celebration, the natural and supernatural world we explore illustrates the beauty and diversity of human artistic expression. Spirituality, love and longing, images of birds and flight, and the human quest for freedom, reinforce our theme in a stream of fascinating shadow imagery by Larry Reed’s ShadowLight Productions. Cinematic moving shadows create a magical environment for the transitions between the pieces, connecting the pieces together and offering an engaging flow to the artistry.

We hope that along with the excellence of the dance and music, these exciting innovative approaches to the Festival enhance your experience, curiosity, and passion for dance and the many cultures that create it.”
